About Smith & Company

A CPA who actually understands your job costs – not just your tax return.

Smith & Company was built around one gap: contractors who’ve outgrown a bookkeeper but aren’t big enough to justify a full-time controller. You work directly with a CPA, every month — never handed off to junior staff, never just handed a dashboard and left to interpret it yourself.

Meet the person behind the reports

Meet Jonathan Smith, CPA

Before I ever went to college, I worked in the construction trades. That’s not a line on a resume — it’s the reason I understand what a superintendent means when he says a job “feels off” before the numbers catch up to him. Twenty-five years later, construction is still where I’ve spent nearly my entire career, on both sides of the desk.

After earning my accounting degree, I worked as a project accountant for a local home builder — job costing, draws, and the day-to-day mechanics of keeping a construction ledger honest. From there I moved into public accounting as an external auditor at a regional CPA firm with a large construction-industry client base. That’s where the specialty became a career: I became my audit team’s go-to resource for construction-specific accounting, the person other auditors pulled in when a client’s percentage-of-completion schedule or retainage treatment didn’t add up.

I later moved into industry, working for a billion-dollar, PE-backed construction company — leading process design and improvement, revenue recognition, financial statement preparation, audit management, and technology implementation and data migration, among other responsibilities. That’s the same range of work most contractors in the $5–20M range need, just scaled down from a corporate finance department to a single CPA who shows up every month.

I started this firm because I get real satisfaction from being close to this industry and helping the people in it succeed — not from managing a portfolio of interchangeable clients. That’s why I keep my roster deliberately small: every retainer client gets a CPA who’s spent 25 years learning construction from the field up, not a junior associate reading from a template.

Based in Buford, Georgia, I work face-to-face with contractors across metro Atlanta, and remotely with clients anywhere in the continental United States — the modern QBO, Ramp, and Knowify stack makes distance a non-issue for delivery, even when a kickoff or a go-live calls for an in-person day.

Why This Firm

What sets this practice apart

Three things most firms don’t combine – we built the practice around doing all three things at once.

CPA-level judgement

Modified cash vs. accrual decisions, close processes, and controls – the accounting fundamentals most tech-stack consultants get wrong.

Modern tech-stack fluency

Hands-on implementation of QuickBooks Online, Ramp, and Knowify – most accountants know the ledger, not the tools you run jobs on every day.

Proprietary WIP Methodology

A multi-variance WIP and margin-fade analysis, built and refined to pinpoint problems before they get out of hand.
